Authorities say that an 11-year-old girl was bitten by a mountain lion in Malibu on Sunday night.
Deputies were dispatched to a home in the 32500 block of the Pacific Coast Highway at around 5:45 p.m. after learning of the incident, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
Deputies said that the girl's family took her to a nearby hospital afterward. Her condition was not immediately known, but she was said to still be in the hospital on Monday with injuries to her right arm, right leg and lower back.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife took over the investigation, according to LASD. They said that the girl was doing chores around the outside of her family home when the attack happened.
The girl's mother and sibling rushed outside after hearing screaming in the backyard, they said. CDFW officials said the mountain lion ran away when it was scared off by noise.
They later found it hiding in brush on the property, where they shot and killed it. Investigators then took DNA samples which they will compare with other samples taken from the girl to determine if it was the correct mountain lion.
Wildlife officials say that though mountain lion attacks are rare, the home is located close to a habitat for the big cats.
Last year, a by a different cougar while picnicking in Malibu Creek State Park. That mountain lion was also euthanized.
