Wegmans recalls some cheese products due to potential listeria contamination

Wegmans Food Markets is recalling several of its cheese products due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recall affects several varieties of cheese produced by its own private label and sold in Wegmans stores across its operating region.

The specific cheeses involved, along with their packaging information (including best-by dates and product codes), were listed on the Wegmans website and announced via press release.

Customers who purchased the affected cheeses are urged not to consume them and return them to their local Wegmans store for a full refund.

Listeria monocytogenes is a serious bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a potentially fatal illness, particularly for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, and nausea.

In severe cases, it can lead to meningitis or even death.

The recall was initiated after routine testing by Wegmans detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some samples of the affected cheeses.

The company emphasized its commitment to food safety and stated it is cooperating fully with regulatory agencies in their investigation.

Wegmans encouraged customers to contact their customer service department if they had any questions or concerns regarding the recall.

The company also highlighted the importance of proper food handling and storage practices to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses.

The recall serves as a reminder of the constant vigilance required in the food industry to ensure product safety.

Wegmans is recalling its brand of medium camembert cheese and products that contain it due to potential contamination, which can lead to serious illness.

Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the affected items, which were sold between July 1 and Aug. 12, include:

The affected products were sold at Wegmans in the following locations:

So far, no illnesses have been reported to Wegmans or its supplier, but officials say customers should not consume the products and can return them for a full refund.

Listeria infections are caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria called Listeria monocytogenes.

In healthy individuals, short-term may include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. But for young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, the infection can be serious and sometimes fatal. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
